Event: Hack Wars at Chandigarh University
Dates: September 15-16
Place: Chandigarh, India

Participants:

The event demographic were mainly undergrad students aged 18-22, primarily from a computer science background. 1000+ college students attended the event, which was a 24-hour hackathon with participants from all across India. College teachers/other faculty and some judges & dignitaries from various tech startups also joined the event.

Highlights of the event:

  • Introduced students to Nym, NymVPN & opportunities in the Nym ecosystem
  • Many of them visited our stall to test the NymVPN app
  • Potential university partnerships for the future

Survey results:

  1. Preferred VPNs
  2. Where did they first come across VPNs?
  3. Top 3 features you’d like to see in a VPN?
    We saw a variety of answers but the most common answers were: private/secure, free and fast.
  4. How much would they be willing to pay for a VPN subscription monthly?
    300 INR is roughly 3.5 USD
    {B31D5062-417E-41D4-BC4E-DBE68ED0F7A7}
  5. What activities do they use a VPN for usually?
    {CBC54046-FEF7-4C9A-863A-9DE93E803B31}

Takeaways:

  • More merch/gifts can work well to grow channels
  • College students are more interested in developing/running nodes
  • More one-pager intro to Nym will also be helpful for events
  • Typically, most college students have been using a free VPN. 70%+ seemed to be using/had used at least 1 VPN before

Conclusions

Nym had a stall for 2 days at the event, in addition to a 15 minute speaker slot where we could share the project with all participants.

We were able to gather feedback about VPNs from 60+ survey participants & many others came to the stall to test the NymVPN app. University authorities are also keen to have blockchain focused hackathons, which can even involve building on Nym in the future.
